El-Rufai’s Defection to SDP, a Political Suicide- Olowofela warns

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a move that has generated significant political discourse.

Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, the Federal Character Commissioner from Oyo State and former Commissioner for Education, has weighed in on the development, describing El-Rufai’s decision as a “political suicide.”

In a statement, Olowofela noted that El-Rufai’s political journey has been characterized by restlessness and courage. However, he argued that the former governor should have exercised patience, drawing parallels with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategic political maneuvers.

According to Olowofela, Tinubu successfully built political alternatives to challenge the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leading to the eventual formation of APC, which ended the PDP’s extended rule. He warned that abandoning APC at this juncture could be detrimental to El-Rufai’s political future.

“For El-Rufai to abandon APC is a political suicide because Tinubu will win his second term with an array of seen and unseen political foot soldiers,” Olowofela stated.

He further argued that SDP, as a political party, has lost relevance since the era of Chief Moshood Abiola, and any attempt to revive it would be futile. As we begin the blessed month of Ramadan in 2025 (1446 AH), I extend my heartfelt greetings to my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, both at home and abroad.

Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and compassion. It offers us the opportunity to purify our minds, bodies, and souls, and reminds us to show kindness to those less privileged.

I am deeply grateful to the people of Ila-Orangun and the entire Ila/Boluwaduro/Ifedayo Federal Constituency for their unwavering support and trust. Your resilience and commitment to our shared progressive values inspire me daily.

Despite recent minor setbacks, I urge you all to remain steadfast and hopeful. Let us continue to pray for our dear state, Osun, and be confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel as we approach 2026. Our collective efforts and prayers will pave the way for a brighter future.

Governor Adeleke Must Obey Court Ruling and Halt Illegal LG Election

Ila-Orangun, Osun State – February 21, 2025

I, Hon. Chief Adeniyi Ismail Oluwatosin, a chieftain and stakeholder of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, call on His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, to respect the rule of law and immediately suspend the illegal local government election scheduled for February 22, 2025.

Doing this will be the best decision following the recent and needless bloodshed that occurred earlier this week. As the people of Osun, we are known for peace and prosperity. I urge all stakeholders, beyond party affiliations, to come together and advise the governor to abort this ambition of an election, if not for anything, at least for the respect for the rule of law, peace, and in honor of the dead.

Mr. Governor, please do not forget that the Court of Appeal has reinstated the duly elected local government officials, affirming that their tenure remains valid until October 2025. Any attempt to proceed with a fresh election is not only unconstitutional but a direct affront to judicial authority. The governor must not take actions that could destabilize the peace of our state.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clearly stated that any attempt to conduct this election would be invalid and a violation of the Constitution. I urge Governor Adeleke to heed this legal advice and refrain from actions that could lead to unnecessary political tension.

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) must also respect this ruling and halt any preparations for the planned election. It is our collective responsibility to uphold democracy and ensure that the will of the people prevails.

I call on all APC members and the good people of Osun State to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will not be intimidated or silenced. Our commitment to justice, democracy, and the rule of law remains unwavering, and we expect Governor Adeleke to uphold the Constitution he swore to protect.
