Full Text: Independence Day Speech by APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel

62 years ago today, we gained our freedom and sovereignty as an independent state.

Our destiny became ours to forge, just as our founding fathers had imagined. The victory was hard won. They gave blood, sweat, and tears. Many sacrificed their lives. Their struggles and high resolve shook the halls of Westminster and gave courage to the oppressed in Soweto. In the end, they were rewarded with the birth of a liberated nation of proud and determined people driven by a strong sense of self-determination.

Independence Day Speech by Dayo Israel continued below

As we commemorate the event today, we bear witness to their sacrifices and recommit ourselves to the bold idea they bequeathed us. The idea of a united Nigeria, standing tall as the most powerful black force on the face of the earth. One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.

Ours is a unique assemblage few anywhere else in the world can rival. A union of over 300 ethnicities, each with their own proud history and rich culture. Even our landscape and peculiar natural elements demonstrate this richness and give credence to the belief that we are specially blessed by God.

From the beautiful Idanre Hills which tell the story of a people’s determination to thrive, to the Yankara Game Reserve in Bauchi where natural warm water springs offer soul refreshment and renewal; Nigeria is beautiful beyond measure. Our different languages give meaning to a shared purpose: an unflinching allegiance to a prosperous life lived in dignity and pride.

This is why our union has survived, despite many doomsday predictions and the actions of malevolent actors who, for self-serving purposes, seek to divide us. But it is also the cause of our palpable frustration. Nigeria has not always met our expectations. Our reality remains short of the dreams and visions of our founders. The hopes and dreams of our mothers and fathers who on this day in 1960 adorned themselves in green and white and danced in the streets to welcome the full birth of our nation remain elusive. But not for want of trying.

We have an administration today that is faithful in its renewal of the social contract between the leaders and the led. Our infrastructure are being rebuilt. The war against poverty and terror is being won. Our reputation as a home of proud men and women with immense value to offer the world has been restored and fully established. Our youths have built unicorns. We have and continue to make meaningful additions to the technological revolution changing the world and the way we live. Our journey to renewed greatness is well underway.

Today’s event offers an opportunity to look back on the past and reflect on our national quest for survival and success. This is important. An Igbo proverb warns that a man who does not know where the rain began to beat him cannot say where he dried his body.

Permit me to expand this age-old wisdom by adding that that man, upon discovering the point the rain began to pour down on him, must not now spend his time analyzing all that he could have done differently such that he misses opportunities to take actions to alter the present and usher in the future. We must not dwell in the past and talk ourselves into inaction.

It is as Winston Churchill told a doubtful Britain upon assuming office that: if we open a quarell between the present and the past, we shall be in the danger of losing the future. I repeat this message to us today as we recount our journey and countdown to an important leadership change in a matter of months.

The hopes and dreams of 1960 remain attainable because Nigeria still retains its most important asset: us, the Nigerian people. Our talents, courage, commitment, character, and moral responsibility. We have it in our power to make the Nigeria of our dreams a reality. We carry the heavy weight of the legacy of our forebears and it behoves on us to fufill the pledge that the labors of our heroes past will not be in vain.

Long live the Federal Republic!

Breaking: FG Declares Monday Public Holiday

FG Declares Monday Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Monday October 3, 2022, as public holiday to mark the nation’s 62nd Independence Anniversary Celebration.

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, the minister congratulated all Nigerians on this year’s celebration and assured of government’s commitment to tackling all the challenges facing the nation and bring smiles to the faces of all the people.

“The world is going through dire economic and security challenges which have also affected our nation. However, I am assuring us all that the government will not abandon the people, but will continue to confront all these challenges with all the might at our disposal until respite comes our way”, the Minister said.

Aregbesola reiterated the eminent position of Nigeria in the comity of nations and the greatness ahead of the country if Nigerians work hard at it as a people.

“Our warmth, welcoming spirit and love as well as our unbounded human capital and the richness of our land, make Nigeria unarguably the leading black nation in the world and Africa’s pride and beacon of hope. If we can rally ourselves together to harness our potentials, we shall be the greatest nation on the earth.

“A country of over 200 million people whose natural talents, grit and passion glitter like the precious diamond that we are; Nigerians are sparkling like diamonds in the pack, whether in the academia, science and technology, business, innovation, music, entertainment, fashion or culture” Aregbesola said.

The Minister admonished Nigerians to use the occasion of the celebration to reflect on the challenges facing the nation and the role individuals can play in addressing them.

He urged Nigerians to work hard, shun any attraction to get rich through criminal and other immoral means, saying only through productivity can an individual and the nation create wealth and get rich.

While wishing Nigerians a memorable independence celebration, he reminded them of the fact that the nation’s founding fathers, in spite of the differences in faith, tribe and tongue, still came together for Nigeria’s independence.

“Though our nation is going through challenges, especially on security, these challenges are temporary and do not define us. We are defined by the greatness of the Nigerian people in our diversity, strength, ingenuity and resilience.

“We shall overcome all the challenges. A time is coming when we shall look at this period in retrospect and give thanks to the most high for the stormy waters we have waded through and the triumphs we have recorded over the challenges that look so huge and gargantuan today”, he stated.

He therefore, called on all Nigerians to join hands together with the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration in its quest to ensure a better Nigeria for all citizens, both at home and abroad as this, he said, shall be a befitting tribute to our heroes past.

The Minister urged Nigerians to shun violence of any kind and be security conscious, asking them to report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest security agency and through the N-Alert application on Android and IOS.

“When you see something do N-Alert for prompt response from security agents”, he charged
